What to Do When Issues Arise
Experiencing problems with your braces can be stressful, but knowing how to handle common issues can help you manage them effectively until you can visit our office. Here are some practical tips for dealing with emergencies related to your orthodontic appliances.Types of Orthodontic Emergencies
Injuries
- Immediate Steps: If you sustain an injury to your mouth or teeth, whether or not you are undergoing orthodontic treatment, apply ice to the affected area and contact your regular dentist as soon as possible. You should also inform our office.
- Dental Care: An x-ray may be necessary to assess the extent of the injury. If a tooth has been displaced, knocked out, or fractured, see your family dentist first, as we may lack the necessary tools or anesthesia for such treatments. Once your general dentist has addressed the immediate issue, we can then adjust or replace any displaced orthodontic appliances.
Broken Orthodontic Appliances
Handling Loose or Broken Appliances: If you notice any broken or bent appliances, such as loose bands, brackets, or poking wires, call our office during regular patient hours to schedule an appointment. Emergencies cannot be handled on a walk-in basis for the convenience of all patients. If you already have an adjustment appointment scheduled, inform us of the issue so we can allocate sufficient time to address it.- Irritating Tie Wires: If a tie wire is causing discomfort, cover it with beeswax, sugarless chewing gum, or gently tuck it under the archwire using a blunt object like a pencil eraser.
- Loose Bands or Brackets: Generally, a loose band or bracket can remain in place until you visit our office. Call us during patient hours to arrange for reattachment or replacement.
- Broken or Poking Archwires: If an archwire is broken or poking, you can sometimes adjust it with a pencil eraser or cut it with nail clippers. Contact our office if the issue persists or if you need further assistance.
